How it works
Formulas
Strips = wall width ÷ roll width × (1 + waste %), rounded upStrip length = wall height rounded up to whole pattern repeatsRolls = strips ÷ whole strips per roll, rounded upWorked example
Input: 12 × 10 ft room, 8 ft walls, 3 ft of doors, 20.5 in × 33 ft rolls, no repeat, 10% extra.
- Wall width: 2 × (12 + 10) − 3 = 41 ft = 492 in.
- 492 ÷ 20.5 = 24 strips × 1.10 = 26.4 → 27 strips.
- 33 ÷ 8 = 4 strips per roll.
- 27 ÷ 4 = 6.75 → 7 rolls.
Result: 7 rolls (with a 21 in repeat: 9 rolls).

FAQ
Why count strips instead of square feet?
Wallpaper is hung in full-height strips, and the leftover piece at the end of a roll is often too short for another strip. Counting strips per roll gives the real number of rolls.
What does pattern repeat do?
Each strip has to start at the same point in the pattern, so its length is rounded up to a whole number of repeats. A 21 in repeat on an 8 ft wall makes each strip 8 ft 9 in, so a 33 ft roll gives 3 strips instead of 4.
What size is a roll of wallpaper?
US 'double rolls' are usually about 20.5 in × 33 ft (56 sq ft); European rolls are 53 cm × 10.05 m (5.3 m²).
Can I use metric units?
Yes. Switch to Metric and enter meters and centimeters; results show cubic meters, square meters or tonnes alongside US units.
